Covid-19 lockdowns may have resulted in 4,155 excess non-covid deaths in 2020

Sept 15th, 2021

Statistics Canada put out a report in July 2021 about excess deaths for the the 2020-2021 year and has some shocking revelations, most notable is this section:

from the end of March 2020 to the beginning of April 2021, an estimated 62,203 deaths were reported among Canadians aged 0 to 64. This represents 5,535 more deaths than expected were there no pandemic, after accounting for changes in the population such as aging. Over the same period, 1,380 COVID-19 deaths have been attributed to the same age group (those younger than 65), suggesting that the excess mortality is, in large part, related to other factors such as increases in the number deaths attributed to causes associated with substance use and misuse, including unintentional (accidental) poisonings and diseases and conditions related to alcohol consumption.

This summary indicates the lockdowns seem to have resulted in +4,155 excess deaths for under 65 for 2020 that were not covid-19 related. We get this by taking the excess deaths 5,535 subtracting 1,380 covid-19 deaths.

Many anti-lockdown advocates have been saying the lockdowns beyond the initial two weeks to flatten the curve may have negative societal effects, the statcan data backs up those fears. It's well supported that the combination of lockdown isolation in addition to the free CERB money resulted in the spike of drug abuse and suicide deaths.
